Canine Diet
1.75 - 2.5 lbs. ground beef
2 lbs. ground turkey
Brown meats together in 1/2 cup canola oil; then set aside14 scant scoops (scoop included in pkg.) Brewer's Yeast/Garlic Powder (available in pet supply store)
1 or 2 green peppers
1 can pinto, or red, beans (with liquid)
1 can tomatoes (with liquid)
1 can green beans (with liquid)
1/2 bunch broccoli (or 1 sm. pkg. frozen)
1 can asparagus (with liquid)...optional
1 can (or..pkg. of frozen or 1/2 bag fresh) spinach
7 or 8 fresh carrots
1 butternut squash (prick with fork & bake in micro; use all BUT seeds/stem)
1/3 bunch celery
fresh or dried parsley
1 bag/box fresh bean or alfalfa sprouts
1 sweet potato/yam (I pre-bake by poking with fork, then microwaving for 9 min.) UNsweetened canned pumpkin may be used, also (I often use cauliflower, zucchini...whatever is cheap & in season.
NO ONIONS, CABBAGE, OR CORN)
Actually, the veggies may be varied from week to week, so long as the over-all amount is about the same AND there is a good balance of yellow and green veggies)
Chop all veggies fine, in about 3 batches, in the food processor (do a mix of fresh & canned in each batch, as they process finer & quicker that way). Put all veggies in large (3 qt. bowl) with 1 T. garlic powder (NOT garlic salt!) & 1 t. salt. Cook on high in microwave for 13 min, then on 60% power for addt'l 10 min. Mix meats & veggies in LARGE refrigerator container/lid. Cook entire contents of a 42 oz. , dry-measure, container of old-fashioned oatmeal with 13 cups water (do in 2 separate batches!) in lrg. (3 qt. ) bowl...microwave on high for 9 min., then an addt'l 9 min on 40% power. Mix oatmeal in with veggie mixture.
* * * * * * Alternative cooking method which I've recently devised:
Cut fresh veggies into chunks, put into pressure cooker. Open cans of veggies & drain liquid into pan with fresh veggies. Cover & bring to full 14 lb. pressure...cook for 2 min. ONLY...cool quickly with cold water over side of pan. Take cooked fresh veggies from liquid with slotted spoon & place in food processor with canned veggies. Blend all to a "sorta puree". Then, use remaining veggie liquid in pan as part of the water needed to cook the oatmeal. IN that way, ALL the nutrients are remaining with the food. I also use my hand mixer to blend the final product to a "paste"...mixing in 2 (one is 33 C. & the other is 17 C.) rectangular Rubbermaid storage containers. One of these is stored in the fridge & used from. The rest goes into the freezer; in this manner, I have enough food for several days, but there is always fresh. If I forget to defrost before we need it, I just substitute a mac'n mac meal in, to temporize!
* * * * * NOTE: for one 60# dog, I would freeze about 3/4 of this batch in smaller (approx 6 - 8 C each) containers. ONLY try to refrigerate about 4-days-worth at a time, in order to keep it fresh.
