Boxer Mush for One

  • 1 lb. lean ground beef or turkey
  • 1/2 teasp. minced garlic*
  • 1 T. vegetable oil 1 14.5 oz. can pinto beans (drained)
  • 1 14.5 oz. can green beans (drained)
  • 1 14.5 oz. can chopped tomatoes
  • 2 c. chopped fresh vegetables (I use carrots and broccoli)
  • 1 1/2 c. oatmeal

In a large pot, saute the meat and garlic until cooked. (* Otisse likes the taste (smell?) of garlic. I understand from the BML that onions and garlic can be problem for dogs, especially if raw, so be sure it's cooked and don't use if your dog can't tolerate). Stir in the oil, beans, and tomatoes (with the liquid) and cook. You might want to chop up the green beans a little; I just use a fork while they are still in the can.

Then add your fresh vegetables. As you cook, add about a can and a half full of water to the mix. When the goop is good and hot and the fresh veggies have softened a little, gradually add the oatmeal, stirring well. Keep stirring until it is well mixed and cooked. You should have a mushy mixture. Next time vary your water and oatmeal to get the consistency you and your dog like.

I freeze half. Half a batch lasts about a week, added to dry food. The frozen won't be quite the same in consistency, but if it's really thick I add a little water and microwave it a little bit before stirring into the dry food.

I have used less or more fresh veggies, and have skipped the green beans on occasion. Since this is additive rather than Otisse' sole diet I am flexible about the nutrient mix. The beauty of this is it cooks up fast and isn't a lot of work. And Otisse loved it.

This Recipe is offered in Tribute to Otisse who passed to Rainbow Bridge in 1997!
