Most people agree that you can save a lot of money ordering certain supplies through catalogs - even with the shipping charges.

Check the catalog for minimum order requirements and shipping (some shipping charges are based on distance from the company to you). And read the fine print for other charges: handling, service, etc.

From discussions on the BML and other dog-related mailing lists, it appears UPCO, Steele, and JB have excellent book lists and they are generally less expensive than your local book store. Talk is, however, that Direct Book Service has the best selection. Be sure to check the price on books before ordering - there can be a BIG difference.

New England Serum, K-V Vet Supply, and Omaha Vaccine offer vet drugs and chemicals in addition to a good supply of other items. Jeffers is considered most economical for vaccines but the overall focus is farm animals. UPCO also carries vaccines and vet drugs, with a good variety of general dog items.

When ordering prescription drugs, make sure you get a veterinarian's prescription. The catalog companies won't process an order without it - and the prescription must be mailed to them, not faxed.

When ordering vaccines, etc. in times of extreme temperatures, be sure to check on the shipping method. And be sure to ask what the return policy is should you believe temperatures (or anything else) may have damaged the serums.
